Captain James Powers is the driving force behind NorCal Traditions Sportfishing, bringing years of experience and a deep passion for fishing to every San Francisco and Sacramento fishing charter. From a young age, he was drawn to the water, and today he focuses on providing engaging and memorable fishing experiences for anglers of all skill levels. His extensive knowledge of local waters, combined with his careful attention to each guest, ensures that every trip is organized, safe, and productive. Whether guiding experienced anglers or introducing newcomers to the sport, Captain Powers’ approach fosters confidence and trust on the water.
Captain Powers became a fishing guide to share his passion and give others the thrill of catching fish—whether it’s a first catch, a bucket-list species, or a trophy. Each trip reflects his dedication to creating unique and rewarding experiences, and he enjoys seeing the excitement when preparation and skill turn into a successful catch. Guiding here is distinctive because NorCal Traditions has access to both the bay and the ocean, increasing opportunities to find fish. Trips typically run 8 to 12 hours, with ice provided for the catch and the option to stay out longer if needed. Peak season runs from March through November, with sturgeon fishing in the delta during winter months.
Beyond traditional fishing trips, Captain Powers offers year-round experiences including kids’ lessons, whale watching, historical site tours, and family-friendly first-catch outings. Many guests return repeatedly, a reflection of his ability to combine expertise with a welcoming, approachable style. For Captain Powers, fishing is as much about creating lasting memories as it is about catching fish, and his dedication shows in every trip he leads.
The Boat
Captain Powers’ vessel, a 24-foot Raider Hard Top, is designed for comfort, safety, and performance on the water. Powered by a 300HP Suzuki engine, it provides a stable and smooth ride, even in challenging offshore conditions. The boat is fully equipped with premium rods, reels, tackle, and advanced electronics to support successful outings targeting halibut, striped bass, rockfish, lingcod, and bluefin tuna. Conveniently docked at a marina for easy access, the vessel serves as a reliable platform for exploring San Francisco Bay, Sacramento waters, and offshore areas, ensuring a productive and enjoyable day for every angler on board.
